‘Nancy (With the Laughing Face)’ is a classic ballad composed by Jimmy Van Heusen with lyrics by Phil Silvers, originally written for the birthday of Frank Sinatra’s daughter Nancy. The song later became closely associated with Sinatra, who recorded it in 1944.

John Coltrane recorded his instrumental interpretation of the tune during the sessions for the album Ballads (1962), released by Impulse! Records. The album features Coltrane’s quartet with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. In this setting, Coltrane delivers a lyrical and deeply expressive tenor saxophone performance, highlighting his warm tone and melodic phrasing.
