It was composed in 1958 by Álvaro Carrillo, but became popular in 1997, when Mexican singer Luis Miguel included a version of "Sabor a mí" on Romances, his twelfth studio album, in which he performs a collection of classic Latin American songs published between 1940 and 1978.

The song was released as a single in 1998 and reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot Latin chart in the United States.
